The Good
Let's face it: learning a language with a completely different alphabet and grammar structure is never going to be easy! It sure isnt' for me. But, with Rocket Japanese, learning Japanese became surprisingly easier. Thanks to it, you'll never struggle to say words like origato and sayonara. Best of all, it's CHEAP--less than $100 for a thousand dollars' worth of lessons. I didn't have to pay for a tutor or a classroom course. I was able to learn effectively, at my own convenience, with this course.
The best part is definitely the illustrations, particularly of the Hirana characters in the Japanese alphabet. No other system that I've seen has such a comprehensive learning tool as MegaHirana, the tool for learning to write in Japanese. It makes an otherwise intimidating alphabet so much easier.
Not to mention the audio tracks that teach you pronunciation and vocabulary--you'll find them invaluable to learning how to speak Japanese.
The Bad
I personally don't like some of the illustrations. Also, it's the same formula as Rocket Spanish, Rocket German, and Rocket French, so if you've tried those courses and not enjoyed them, don't bother with Rocket Japanese. BUT, if you did like them, then this is the course for you.
The Free!
A useful 6-day audio and text mini-course is available free of charge. It's certainly worth checking out, especially for a difficult language like Japanese. Get an idea if it's a language you really want to--and CAN--learn.
